Dear Artists, Friends and Colleagues,
Artspace and the City of Waukegan are working together to make an artist live/work project in downtown Waukegan a reality. Following the very successful artist survey in which many artists expressed a need for, and an interest in such a project, Artspace entered into a development agreement with the City of Waukegan.
Currently we are investigating the feasibility of converting the Karcher Hotel to artist lofts. An architect has been hired to assist with this feasibility work and to investigate the alternative possibility of developing a vacant lot also in the downtown area.
Identifying and securing primary funding is a crucial next step. We have applied for affordable housing tax credits from the State of Illinois and are waiting to learn whether we will receive an award of this significant funding resource. Awards will be announced in December.
